TEK designed a new community center building at the Throgg's Neck Houses, public housing in the Bronx administered by the New York City Housing Authority. This project is the largest of seven new community centers initiated by the Design Department at NYCHA. The building consists of a gymnasium, classrooms, a computer center, offices, support spaces and a community event room. The surrounding site will be landscaped with plazas, seating areas and play spaces. To enliven the relatively large building mass, our design uses various opaque, translucent and transparent materials in overlapping, collage-like compositions. Construction began in the spring of 2002.
