La Marqueta consisted of five WPA
era industrial buildings built during the LaGuardia
Administration to replace the pushcart markets originally
on the site. Principal Martin Kapell worked with the
NYC Economic Development Corporation to revive this
concept, designing an outdoor market punctuated by a
series of colorful pavilions which draw people from
the steep slope of 116th Street to the entrance at 115th
Street. The porcelain enamel pavilions, made of graffiti-resistant
material, create a whimsical, welcoming, and vibrant
outdoor environment within the neighborhood.
